About the Role 

Latinos for Education is seeking an experienced and dedicated Manager of Finance to join our People, Operations, and Finance team. The Manager of Finance will play a crucial role in ensuring the financial health and sustainability of our organization. This role requires a strategic thinker with a deep understanding of financial management within the nonprofit sector. This position reports to the Managing Director of Finance and collaborates cross-functionally with Operations, Programs, and Development teams. 

Responsibilities  

The Manager of Finance will partner with key stakeholders in strategic decision making as the organization continues to scale. Their key responsibilities will include:  

Finance and Accounting 

  • Manage and execute all day-to-day finance operations of a budget of $6 million and oversee support in the oversight of functional responsibility over accounting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and grants administration, ensuring compliance with appropriate GAAP standards and regulatory requirements, including proper expense allocations.
  • Prepare and analyze monthly and annual financial statements promptly and within deadlines.
  • Lead the preparation of materials for the annual audit and serve as liaison to external auditors.
  • Coordinate and ensure timely and accurate filing of all federal and state tax reports, including IRS Form 990 and applicable state charitable registrations.
  • Analyze financial data and prepare accurate and timely financial reports for internal and external stakeholders. 
  • Implement and improve all necessary finance and accounting policies and procedures for greater effectiveness and decision-making across the organization.
  • Assist in the annual budgeting process by administering and reviewing all financial plans and comparing actual results to identify, explain, and correct variances as appropriate. 

Grant and Contract Management 

  • Drive all financial aspects of grants and grant agreements, including budget development, reporting, and compliance.
  • Collaborate with regional Executive Directors and Programs team to ensure financial alignment with grant objectives.
  • Conduct regular financial analysis, providing insights to inform strategic decision-making and resource allocation.
  • Oversee vendor management from onboarding to contract close, ensuring alignment to budget, timely invoicing of contract deliverables, and proactively flagging contract renewals. 

General Management and Operations 

  • Provide oversight for payroll and benefits administration in collaboration with the external bookkeeper and the People, Culture, & Operations lead.
  • Manage financial systems and software (Latinos for Education currently uses QuickBooks, Bill.com, Expensify), ensuring accuracy and efficiency in data management.
  • Support the Managing Director, Finance with managing and minimizing risk by monitoring risk management policies and procedures to ensure that program and organizational risks are minimized.
  • Support execution of the organization’s financial strategy and vision, integrating business planning with strategic financial management.
  • Participate in national and regional team meetings and retreats.

Required

Experience 

  • 5+ years of general professional experience.
  • 3+ years of experience in the finance or accounting field in nonprofits. 

Competencies 

  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to convey complex finance issues to diverse audiences and engage stakeholders effectively.
  • Proven experience in supporting organizational budgeting processes for a complex, matrixed organization.
  • Strong knowledge of non-profit accounting principles and regulations.
  • Proven experience in budgeting, financial analysis, and grant management.
  • Exceptional verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills; ability to effectively engage in writing and in-person (including virtually) with a variety of stakeholders and audiences.
  • Excellent organizational, problem-solving, and analytical skills; detail-oriented with focus on both accuracy and process.
  • Ability to create, improve, and evaluate systems and processes for increased efficacy and efficiency.
  • Proactive self-starter with strong adaptability and resilience; able to navigate change, balance competing priorities, and maintain a solutions-oriented mindset. 

Skills 

  • Proficiency in Microsoft 365 (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), Adobe, MS Teams, OneDrive, SharePoint, Zoom.
  • Proficiency with online financial systems such as QuickBooks, Bill.com, and Expensify.
  • Intermediate proficiency with generative AI tools, understanding core concepts like LLMs and their applications, and proficiency using generative AI tools for specific tasks to improve efficiency and decision-making (note that Latinos for Education provides OpenAI for Nonprofit [ChatGPT] accounts for all employees). 

Preferred: 

Experience 

  • 3-5 years of nonprofit accounting experience. 

Skills:

  • Proficiency with QuickBooks, Bill.com, and Expensify.
  • Experience with donor databases or CRM systems (Latinos for Education uses Salesforce as its primary CRM).
  • Proficiency in Monday.com or other project management software (Latinos for Education uses Monday.com).
  • Advanced AI proficiency, with expertise in developing, fine-tuning, and integrating generative AI models into complex workflows. 

Compensation 

Latinos for Education offers competitive industry rate salary bands to retain and grow talented individuals. The organization conducts a robust internal and external benchmarking process to ensure that its salaries are competitive. The salary range for this role is commensurate with experience and is as follows: 

  • Compensation Band: $79,900– 108,100
  • Mid-Point: $94,000 

The compensation band mid-point represents the market rate for this position in the Northeast region. It may be adjusted down by 3% for candidates in lower-cost regions (e.g., Greater Houston area) or adjusted up by 5–12% for candidates in high-cost regions such as the NYC tri-state area or the San Francisco Bay Area, to reflect differences in the cost of labor across geographies. Any adjustments to the midpoint based on a candidate’s specific geography will be confirmed during the interview process. A candidate that fully meets the qualifications and experience required for the role can generally expect to be at the mid-point. An offer made to a candidate that is above the mid-point would represent someone who is extraordinarily qualified.
